Medicare is a national health insurance program for individuals age 65 and older. It is also for individuals with certain disabilities. Medicare is divided into multiple pieces and we’ll walk you through each piece and help you put together the best options for you.
Different Pieces of Medicare
What is Medicare Part A? What does Medicare Part A cover?
Part A is considered hospital insurance designed to help cover the cost of inpatient and nursing facility costs. It can also provide coverage for home health care and hospice. Medicare Part A can be looked at as covering the cost of your stay, but not necessarily the treatment.
What is Medicare Part B? What does Medicare Part B cover?
Medicare Part B covers your outpatient care. This coverage take care of your doctor’s visits, lab work, preventive services, ambulance services, and outpatient procedures (including surgeries). Part B also covers cancer treatments and kidney dialysis. Depending on your individual income, the cost of Medicare Part B can vary. What you report to the IRS as your adjusted gross income determines what your Part B premium is.
What about Medicare Part C and Medicare Part D?
Medicare Part C coverage is voluntary and has to be enrolled in separate from Part A and Part B. It’s commonly referred to as the Medicare Advantage program and is considered private insurance. Because it’s technically private insurance, the cost can vary depending on which carrier and plan you select. In order to enroll in a Part C plan, you need to already be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
Medicare Part D, while relatively new has been a huge part of Medicare in recent years. Medicare Part D works similarly to Medicare Part C in that you need to find a carrier and enroll in their prescription drug plan. This Part of Medicare covers the cost of retail prescription drugs regardless if you pick them up yourself or if you get them in the mail. Each state has multiple plans available to choose from. We can help you determine which plan is right for you, based of your needs.

Medicare vs Medicaid
You’ll frequently hear, “What’s the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?”, you might even be asking this question yourself. Medicare is designed to help provide the elderly low cost insurance to help cover the cost of their medical expenses, which as we age can grow substantially. Medicaid, however, is considered healthcare assistance for individuals in lower income brackets that can’t afford regular insurance plans with higher premiums and out of pocket costs.
What does Medicare not cover?
Most people are not aware that Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Here’s a list of some of the things Medicare doesn’t cover:
- Hearing Aids
- Dentures
- Cosmetic Surgery
- Long-term care
- Routine dental and vision care
- Massage Therapy
- Medical care outside the U.S.
